Epping Forest has been sheltering outlaws for centuries. Dick Turpin used it as a hideout in the 1730s, operating out of a base near Loughton while evading the law across Essex and Hertfordshire. The forest’s 2,400 hectares of ancient woodland — spanning parts of Essex and Greater London, home to over 50,000 ancient trees — provided perfect cover then, and it provides perfect cover now. The outlaws have changed. The instinct has not.
Today Epping Forest is one of the most active outdoor dogging destinations in the south-east of England. Each spring and summer the woodland comes to life with couples, singles, and watchers from across Essex and East London, drawn by the combination of genuine seclusion, easy motorway access, and a scene that has been quietly thriving here for decades.
Know Before You Go — The Rangers
One thing that sets Epping Forest apart from most dogging locations in the UK is who patrols it. The forest rangers are not civilian wardens — they are serving officers of the City of London Police, which has jurisdiction over the forest under a centuries-old arrangement. That means getting caught here is not a matter of being moved on by a council employee. Tread carefully, stay discreet, and avoid anything remotely visible from footpaths or roads.
Evening and after dark is significantly safer than daytime. The forest attracts walkers, cyclists, and families during daylight hours — particularly at weekends.
Epping Forest Dogging Locations
Abridge Village Hall Car Park
One of the more accessible spots on the western fringe of the forest. The village hall car park at Abridge attracts regulars after dark, particularly on weekday evenings when the area is quieter. Couples and mixed groups are the norm here.
Gunpowder Park, Waltham Abbey
Located on Sewardstone Road in Waltham Abbey, Gunpowder Park is one of the more secluded options in the forest area. After 10pm is the recommended time — the park quietens significantly and a good number of doggers make their way into the fields adjacent to the information centre. Well established and consistently active.
The Wood Yard, Wake Arms Roundabout
The large wood yard close to the Wake Arms Roundabout on the A104 near Epping is a long-standing favourite. Central location within the forest, good cover, and easy to find from the main road. Popular with couples and singles throughout the week.
Camelot Pub Car Park, Chigwell
The car park opposite the Camelot pub in Chigwell is the established spot for gay dogging in the Epping Forest area. Active most evenings and well known within the community.
Epping Forest and the Essex Dogging Scene
Epping Forest sits at the northern edge of a broader Essex dogging scene that extends south through Brentwood, Basildon, and out towards the coast. Essex has one of the most active outdoor sex communities in England — the combination of easy London access, extensive green belt, and a population that has never been shy about its appetites makes it consistently productive territory. The full guide to Essex dogging locations covers the county beyond the forest.
For the most current spots across the whole country, the UK dogging guide is updated regularly by the Dogging Action community itself.
